Malware Mastermind Detained in Armenia

Malware MastermindDutch site INSPECTOR Skinner attacked a group of crime against computer viruses and covered the boy believed to have been operating in Armenia.

The network could infect three million computers a month and was sending an estimated 3.6 billion virus e-mails to users daily by the end of 2009.

More than 143 servers that form the backbone of the network is disconnected in the Netherlands on Monday, prosecutors said.

The Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty with Armenia and the Dutch authorities are considering the possibility that the suspect has tried.

McAfee also noted that the amount of malware has been the explosion, adding that the first half of 2009 had seen so many malicious sites Laden in 2008.

Antivirus software offering less protection

In its tests, the company used new malicious Web sites within minutes of discovery in addition to brand-new malware, which it contends is indicative of the conditions that users would find while browsing the Internet.

The download and execution blocking rate for the top performing antivirus software of Trend Micro’s Titanium Maximum Security fell from 96.4 percent to 90.1 percent from the third quarter of 2009 to the same period this year.

Ethical Hacking – Wi-Fi networks Easy To Hack

According to security experts, almost half of all home wireless broadband ( Wi-Fi ) networks could be hacked within five seconds.

Fraud prevention firm CPP said, the “ethical hacking” experiment was conducted across six UK cities, revealing some 40,000 vulnerable Wi-Fi networks.

“The biggest concern for consumers is the consistency of speeds they receive,” said Sky, adding that the biggest frustration for 30% of customers was that their speed differed depending on the time of day they logged on.

“And even password-protected networks are not secure,” said researchers. “A typical password can be breached by hackers in a matter of seconds.”

Michael Lynch, identity fraud expert from CPP, said: “This report is a real eye-opener in highlighting how many of us have a cavalier attitude to Wi-Fi use, despite the very real dangers posed by unauthorized use.

“We urge all Wi-Fi users to remember that any information they volunteer through public networks can easily be visible to hackers. It’s vital they remain vigilant, ensure their networks are secure and regularly monitor their credit reports and bank statements for unsolicited activity.”

Michael Phillips added: “As well as installing reliable antivirus software like Norton or McAfee, you should always make sure that you keep it up-to-date.

Michael Phillips advised “Choose separate passwords for different accounts and make sure that a wireless code that you pick will be hard to crack. “Use our free Wireless Key Generator to help you create unique, hard-to-crack your Wi-Fi network passwords.”

Amplified Focus on ZeuS Malware

The crimeware toolkit ZeuS has made current headlines lately by garnering attention of the FBI, and for the new components that allow hackers to break into BlackBerry and Symbian phones.

Such a tense focal point on ZeuS in the news and by foremost security software manufacturers allows for other complicated malware to take a stronger grip in the marketplace, according to a Security Week report. For instance, the Bugat suite is listed by McAfee as a Very Low Risk Level 1 threat.

A recent LinkedIn attack was initially credited to ZeuS, fueling more focus away from the increasing popularity of Bugat. But in reality Bugat was what hackers used in this particular scheme.

Although it isn’t as widespread, the Bugat trojan is just as capable of retrieving illicit credentials and providing profit for the botnet operators. The goal of Bugat is to retrieve financial login information, and have the botnet perform high value wire transfers with the stolen data.

Bugat operates by launching a .exe that monitors the URLs you visit and captures your login details. In addition, in some instances, Bugat will actually modify the look of the login page to gain additional personal information.

Bugat distributes the standard frustrating pieces of malware as well, allowing for unknown file transfers, launching of unintended programs, and rendering windows inoperable. Once it finishes mining data and collecting login credentials, the .exe sends the data back to the botnet to have the illicit transfers executed.

The desired targets are business owners, as automated payments to random resellers may go undetected for some time from large coffers. A standard personal bank account while it may provide the keys to full on identity theft is more work for less return.

As long as the security news of crimeware toolkit ZeuS is of FBI raids–and not gaping security holes affecting the public–we can take some comfort in knowing that the better hackers are on our side. The give and take of malware and the security industry could appear to be miserable, as new threats occur regularly, and in the case of Bugat, old threats return to the surface as newer threats draw all the attention. How ever the security industry remains attentive.

Email Hacking investigate Opposition Leader. Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said there was a “deliberate incursion” into the coalition’s email system.

But lower house Speaker Jennie Lindell today said it was an honest mistake by a parliamentary services IT staff member.

“Our email system was penetrated. It was done deliberately,” Mr Baillieu told reporters.

“We also have, from the material that we’ve received, implications that it’s not the first time.”

The opposition’s claim relates to an email sent mistakenly by parliamentary IT officer Joe Raciti on September 22 to opposition media boss Simon Troeth.

The email appeared to be a request to identify the source of correspondence to a newspaper columnist, in which Mr Troeth was identified as the only correspondent with the writer.

Ms Lindell said the incident was a mistake and not related to any political interference.

She said the secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services had been seeking to identify a leak from a confidential meeting involving parliamentary staff.

“At the same time that this request was made, the IT unit had approved access to the opposition’s email system as they were working at the opposition’s request to resolve a problem relating to the opposition’s email system,” Ms Lindell said.

“In responding to the secretary’s request, the IT technician inappropriately disclosed to the secretary that an email to (the columnist) had been sent from an opposition staffer.”

Ms Lindell said she had asked the parliamentary services department to provide her with options so it could move to a situation where it was not involved in providing IT services to the opposition.

“It is unfortunate that a system of IT support has developed that sees the parliament’s IT system providing support to staff members of the leader of the opposition,” she said.

“These staff, unlike elected officers, are not employees of the parliament.”

The opposition has this week accused the government of running a dirt unit to probe into MPs personal and sexual affairs.

Mr Baillieu said he had seen pictures taken by dirt unit operatives posted outside the opposition’s Spring Street office.

Premier John Brumby said Mr Baillieu was a conspiracy theorist.

“What this is about … is a leader of the opposition who I think sees conspiracies just about every waking moment,” he told ABC Radio.

Mr Baillieu said the premier was launching personal attacks to deflect attention away from the government’s poor performance.

“The commentary that has come from both the premier and the attorney-general the last few days, I think it’s childish,” he said.

Ubiquity – Symantec Stepping up Against Malware

Symantec is accelerating its fight against malware with the introduction of its next-gen platform dubbed “Ubiquity”.

“Now, traditional protection methods require analysis of specific strains and an initial capture of malware. But Ubiquity takes a fundamentally different approach to help secure infrastructure from the latest and most targeted threats.”

Ubiquity analyzes the anonymous software usage patterns of more than 100 million Symantec-shielded PCs – allows the security company to more effectively protect against micro-distributed, mutating threats.

“Ubiquity adds a new layer of protection that bolsters our existing defenses, such as intrusion prevention, as well as behavioral and heuristic detection capabilities,” explained Symantec senior VP Stephen Trilling.

According to Trilling, Ubiquity operates by formulating a security rating for each file based on specific (anonymous) user-generated data – including origin, age, adoption patterns and other proprietary calculations.

“While attackers can easily mutate a malware file’s contents to make it invisible to traditional signatures, they have far less control over these crowd-based demographics.

“However, Ubiquity doesn’t just maintain data on malicious programs, but keeps ratings for virtually every legitimate application on the Internet as well.”

Indeed, Ubiquity’s reputation database currently contains safety ratings on more than 1.5 billion “good” and “bad” executable files, with an average weekly “recruitment” rate of 22 million.

“Interestingly, based on Ubiquity-generated data, we have determined that more than 75 percent of malware affects fewer than 50 Symantec users.

“This statistic highlights the movement toward high-impact, low-distribution targeted threats and shows the need for standing technology, like Ubiquity, to protect against such malware,” added Trilling.
